January 24, 2008 b>Michael Jahns, Senior pitcher/outfielder from Maui's St. Anthony High School, was the lone representative from Hawaii selected to play on the Under 20 US All Star Team in the Goodwill Series Australia XIV. The tournament was comprised of 9 games, split between two cities: Adelaide and Perth over the Christmas holidays, Dec. 14-31, 2007.After the games are played each day the players gathered their belongings and returned to their appointed host family home. Having a host family situation is serving as an excellent way for the ball players to interact with families from Australia and receive an inside view of what life would be like if they actually lived here. It also is providing them with an opportunity to enhance their adaptability skills and a chance to learn about other cultures and customs. Jahns roomed with Brandyn Magee of California's Centennial (Corona) High School. Magee is being highly recruited by many D-1 football programs (Nebraska, Tennessee) as well as baseball. Rob Williams (head coach 20 and under team) view on the Australia trip 2007-2008: "I feel as though this trip is not so much about what player stands out above the rest. It is about all of the players receiving quality daily instruction that can be utilized by them as a stepping stone. This trip to Australia is about players developing, learning, adapting and individually becoming better in one way or another." Jahns has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Northwestern University, beginning in the Fall of 2008. |
